7 Frugal Grocery Shopping Tips to Help You Stop Overspending

by Busra Aulya | 11 Mar 2025

Have you ever gone shopping for groceries but ended up buying snacks, ice cream, or things you didn’t really need? Then, when you reach the checkout, the bill is way higher than you expected, and your wallet feels lighter way too soon?

If this keeps happening, it’s time to shop smarter! Here are some tips to help you enjoy great meals without breaking the bank.

1. Check your kitchen before shopping

Before heading to the market, take a moment to check your fridge and pantry. Many people end up overbuying simply because they forget what they already have at home. Imagine buying a dozen eggs only to realise you already have a full tray! Or stocking up on onions when you still have plenty left.

Make a list of what you already have, especially dry goods like rice, flour, pasta, and nuts, as well as fresh produce like vegetables, fruits, and spices.

Additionally, get into the habit of reorganising your fridge and storage shelves, placing the about-to-expire items up front. This way, you can clearly see what needs to be used before it expires.

2. Plan your meals and cook in batches

A great way to avoid unnecessary spending is to plan your weekly meals. Choose meals that use overlapping ingredients to save money, such as cooking a large batch of chicken that can be turned into different dishes.

You can also try cooking in bulk for multiple meals. If possible, freeze portions so you can enjoy them later without having to cook from scratch again. This approach not only saves time and effort, but also helps you reduce reliance on processed and ready-made meals, which are typically more expensive and often contain unhealthy additives.

3. Take advantage of discounts & deals

Who doesn’t love a good discount? Make use of promotions and special offers, which are often announced on social media or shopping apps.

Many supermarkets offer significant discounts on items that are nearing their expiry date. Take advantage of this but remember to use these items quickly before they expire. Otherwise, you might end up wasting the money you saved by not consuming it on time.

4. Go for local & budget-friendly brands

Many people assume that branded items are always superior, but that’s not necessarily true! Generic or store-brand products often offer the same quality at a lower price.

Also, opting for local and seasonal produce can help you save more. Seasonal produce is usually cheaper, and fresher compared to imported goods, since it doesn’t go through lengthy distribution processes. For example, mangoes are significantly cheaper during harvest season than at other times. Plus, by choosing local products, you’re also supporting local farmers!

5. Shop at traditional markets and haggle for better prices.

If possible, try shopping at traditional markets. Prices are usually cheaper than supermarkets, especially for fresh items like vegetables, fruits, fish, and meat. You can also buy in exact amounts as needed and often negotiate prices.

Market vendors tend to be more flexible with pricing, especially if you buy in bulk. Shopping at local markets doesn’t just save money, it also supports small businesses.

6. Never shop hungry and stick to a cash budget

Have you ever gone shopping on an empty stomach? It’s dangerous! Suddenly, everything looks delicious, and before you know it, your cart is filled with snacks and instant food.

To avoid impulse buying, eat before you go shopping so you can focus on your grocery list. Also, if you tend to overspend, consider bringing the exact amount of cash you will need, or a close estimate. This way, you won’t be tempted to buy extra items you don’t need.

7. Store food properly to keep it fresh for longer

A lot of food goes to waste not because it spoils quickly, but because it is stored improperly. With the right storage methods, you can extend the shelf life of food and reduce waste.

Proper storage makes a huge difference. Leafy greens like spinach and lettuce should be kept in a sealed container in the fridge to stay fresh longer. Meanwhile, potatoes and onions are best stored in a cool, dry place.

You can use airtight containers for dry goods like flour, rice, and nuts to prevent moisture or pests from getting in. If you buy meat or fish in bulk, divide them into smaller portions before freezing, making it easier to use only what you need.

Also don’t forget to check expiry dates and follow the FIFO (First In, First Out) method when arranging your fridge and pantry. Place older items at the front so they get used first.

Small changes in your grocery shopping habits can lead to significant savings over time. Challenge yourself to try out one or two of these tips on your next shopping trip and see the difference! You might be surprised at how much you can save without having to completely revamp your lifestyle. Plus, with the extra money left in your wallet, you can treat yourself to something special, without the guilt of overspending. Happy shopping!
